Chapter 27
It took her two hours to call Mattias. She landed at a nice hotel near her office as there was some convention in town. She put her credit card down and finally made it to the room. The day had taken everything out of her, and while she wanted to talk to Mattias, she didnât know if she could answer all of his questions. She threw herself in the middle of the bed and finally let herself come unglued. She cried like her leg had been sawed off, and she was the one doing the amputation. She couldnât call Mattias until she could talk, after 10 pm, 4 am London time. She hit the Facetime button, and he picked it up immediately.
He looked like he had been lying down. âLuz de Amor, finally. Iâve been tossing and turning.â
She was hiccuping from crying so hard, and she answered him in a voice that sounded like she was a wet rag wrung out. âIâm sorry, Mattias. I couldnât call you until I could think and breathe.â
âInira, my darling â your face! Whatâs happened? Is Emerie ok?â
âYes, well, no. Francis found out about us.â She'd texted him that something had happened but had provided no details. She started crying again, even as no real tears came out. She didnât think she had any tears left.
âWHAT? HOW?â He spoke loudly in alarm and fury. He sounded as if he was about to rip someoneâs flesh from their bones.
When he realized she was crying, he started speaking in low murmurs, something soothing in Spanish. That wasn't one of the seven languages she knew, and she couldn't focus on the words. She wanted nothing more than for him to hold her, even though her spirit felt the knife of shame twist deep. She wasn't ashamed that she wanted to be with Mattias but of how everything had happened. She'd always been so careful and lived her life with integrity. She continued to cry, softer now. This wasn't the torrent from when she first got to the room. Mattias started to sing what sounded like a nursery song. It wasnât in Spanish. It shook her out of her emotion a bit.
She took a deep breath and asked him, âMattias, how many languages do you speak?â
He smiled into the screen, âMaybe as many as you, naui salang.â
Her laugh was small, no more than a huff, âWhat is that one?â
âKorean. Which I do speak, mostly so Lukas wouldn't forget that part of his heritage. I may not like his mother, but I respect her culture. I have a pet project; do you want to hear about it?â
She looked at him through the screen and shrugged, too tired to do much else, but her interest was piqued.
âIâve spent much time looking up the translations of âmy loveâ and âlove lightâ in as many languages as possible. I want to spend the rest of my days figuring out the ones you like best.â
Tears pricked her eyes again; at the moment, she didnât feel like she deserved affectionate names.
